A World of Firsts: 1st-Ever Zoysia Golf Course Projects Announced in 7  Different Locations Around the Globe

Seven golf courses in seven different locations around the world, all of which mark firsts for their region, recently announced that they are grassing their courses with Zoysiagrass varieties developed by Bladerunner Farms. These projects represent the first Zoysia on an entire course in Florida; the first Zoysia golf course in California; the first wall-to-wall Primo Zoysia course in Texas; the first Zoysia green in Australia; the first Zoysia greens in SE Asia in Singapore; and in both the Bahamas and Jamaica, the first BRF Primo Zoysia greens are growing in on two golf courses. Together these projects signify a rising tide of zoysiagrass use on golf course greens—something entirely new that is a fundamental shift in the golf industry.

In Florida, Grove XXIII, the course spearheaded by basketball great Michal Jordan, (named for the number 23 he wore on his uniform) the short course is grassed with Trinty Zoysia on the greens. This Hobe Sound private club’s championship course is grassed with Trinty Zoysia tees and Zeon Zoysia fairways.

In California, the very first Bladerunner zoysiagrass golf course on the west coast broke ground last fall in Middletown near Napa Valley. To be called The Bramble,  Zeon Zoysia will be used on fairways with a decision to come on tees and greens. The Bramble is designed by Coore-Crenshaw, who are already big fans of Bladerunner’s zoysiagrasses since they used Trinity Zoysia at Trinity Forest, the new home of the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament. Doguet reports that James Duncan, part of the ownership group for The Bramble, has told him that Zeon is “doing better than their expectations.”

In Texas, the very first golf course to be grassed wall-to-wall with Primo Zoysia—tees, fairways, and greens.—begins construction spring 2019, grassing starts spring 2020. Developers Tour 18 and The Caldwell Companies are creating a 2000-acre master-planned community with a golf course (as yet unnamed)  in North Houston, Texas.

In Australia, Indooroopilly Golf Club in Queensland is the first golf club in the country to plant a Trinity Zoysia green.

In SE Asia, test greens of both Trinity Zoysia and Primo Zoysia were planted at The Singapore Island Country Club.

In The Bahamas, Tiger Woods’, new short course design at Jacks Bay will have nine greens planted in Primo Zoysia. It is growing in now.

In Jamaica: White Witch Golf Course planted 10 golf greens with Primo Zoysia so far with remaining holes grassing this summer.

And now, after more than 30 years of research and real-world application, it appears the golf industry is made up of zoysia true believers. That decision was the one to exercise the club option on Brian Snitker’s contract as manager. At the time, it seemed a bit strange to confirm the manager before bringing in the GM but it was understandable when you consider that the franchise was desperately seeking some sort of stability at that point.

Despite only winning 72 games in 2017, Snitker was already wildly popular among his own players and it was to the point where Nick Markakis reportedly threatened to fight then-President of Baseball Operations John Hart after Hart berated Snitker following a bad loss that season. Snitker’s popularity with his players went into 2018 did not change — if anything, it only grew.

What did change was the team’s on-field fortunes. The team won 90 games and surprisingly won the NL East as well. Along the way, four players got to take a trip to the All-Star Game, three players received Gold Gloves, one player somehow received a Silver Slugger, and one very notable player received Rookie of the Year honors. They all managed to add these achievements to their personal resume while playing under the eventual 2018 NL Manager of the Year — a manager for whom they likely would have ran through a wall for had he asked them to do so.

While clubhouse harmony isn’t normally a guarantee of on-field results, it certainly helps. Plus, the relationship between the front office and the locker room went from being acrimonious to harmonious. Let’s just say that Atlanta is a long way from having front office members come down and yell at the manager while a player threatens to throw hands with the team president. It’s been a journey of a calendar year for Brian Snitker and if things continue to go like this, he could be a vital part of a bright future for the Braves.

How to Save on Gravel and Mulch – Finding a Landscape Supplier

Waiting for a good sale at the local home improvement store is a decent way to save money on gravel or mulch, but if you’re willing to buy in bulk through landscape supply, you can save even more.

Now that we’re heading into fall and cooler temps in the Atlanta area, it’s the perfect time of year to turn my DIY attention to the yard once more (the summer just makes things too miserable to work all day in the heat!). I have a long to-do list, but you guys have already seen a few things already:

So since all of this is obviously a lot of work, I’m breaking it down for you guys post by post (it’s probably both easier for you guys to get all of the details this way as well as easier for me to write updates about). Note that these pictures span the last few weeks of making improvements in a lot of different areas, so you might see peeks of a few of these other projects too. Let’s start with gravel and mulch — a topic that seems boring, but actually makes for an incredible difference in the yard!

When I last updated you about the fire pit, we ended here — with the new pit installed (save for a few tweaks, like leveling out that one uneven stone), plus a new ring of landscaping fabric and edging that needs to be filled in with gravel.

Considering the size of the ring I wanted to fill in, I figured doing things the same way like I did with the space around the A/C unit (with bags of egg rock) would be a really time-consuming process. Things like gravel and mulch go on sale at the local home store at least once a season, but I found an even better source in a local landscape supply.

There are a few suppliers in my area, but one of the closest was Green Brothers Earth Works* and had all of their prices listed online, which made it a lot easier to plan out. The general idea was to get half a ton of gravel and see how far that would take me, then go back for more (I now borrow my bf’s truck for these kinds of hauls, so time constraints aren’t nearly as stressful as when I had to get my dad to travel to my house and borrow his). My total cost: $15!!!

It was fun to watch everything scooped up and deposited into the truck. It was also super straightforward (specify the amount you want to buy at the front desk, pay, drive the truck around, fill) and they have quite a lot of options to choose from. I did some research online before going so I knew already the type I wanted, but you can also walk around and look through all of your options before making a final decision (gravel, mulch, paver stones, sod, sand, topsoil). I chose a crushed granite that was a medium-ish size — the idea being that it would likely stay within the confines of the edging in the yard (small stones like pea gravel have a tendency to spread and travel all over the place, which isn’t the greatest thing for when you want to mow the rest of the lawn).

Once I got home, we unloaded everything via wheelbarrow and spread with a rigid tine rake.

When we got toward the end, a push broom helped scoop out the rest from the truck (not particularly interesting, but I thought it was a smart solution).

I swear, I wish I’d started going to a place like this sooner. The savings alone! Though I should be clear that even though their prices are listed by the ton, it wasn’t an actual ton of how they measure things out… it’s based on the scoop of the bobcat (one scoop = one half ton, regardless of actual weight). Still, it’s considerably cheaper than the equivalent amount at the local home store when you buy by the bag (which even when on sale is around $4 per bag), so I’m very pleased with finding an inexpensive supplier.

The truckload filled in about half of the gravel area, but I’m going back this week to get another. I also took time over the weekend to get a truckload of dyed brown mulch and spread it around to the rear hedge line along the back fence, in the gardenia beds, and in the corner garden with all of the new hydrangeas (that area also needs gravel, but that will be taken care of with the next pickup!). It makes a HUGE difference in how cleaned up the yard looks! Here’s one example with the back hedge line: before…

And after! Granted, the chain link fence was also removed over the weekend (I’ll have a separate post about that… along with what happened to my neighbor’s broken fence, sigh), but all the new mulch looks spectacular.
